Senator Steven Oroho (R-24), a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement in response to Governor Jon Corzine’s proposal to increase payroll taxes on New Jersey businesses by $350 million in FY 2010.
“I am extremely disturbed that Governor Corzine wants to raise taxes once again on the businesses that provide paychecks to millions of New Jersey families.
“While many small New Jersey businesses are treading water as they struggle to survive, Governor Corzine’s payroll tax increase will be a heavy anchor that pulls them closer to failure. For a state that is already recognized as being the most unfriendly to business in the nation, Governor Corzine’s payroll tax increase will only encourage more businesses to flee New Jersey. Whether it’s through the failure or outward migration of New Jersey businesses, Governor Corzine’s proposed $350 million payroll tax increase will undoubtedly cost many residents their jobs.
“After seven years of recurring budget crises, repeated tax increases and skyrocketing debt, it is time to take a different path.
“We have an opportunity to fix New Jersey, but that opportunity will not be realized until Governor Corzine has the courage to reverse the anti-business policies that continue to cost New Jersey residents their jobs.”
