Tax Cuts, Job Creation, School Funding and Education Reform Needed
Senator Steve Oroho (R-24) issued the following statement in response to Governor Christie’s State of the State address:
“Since taking office two years ago, Governor Christie has worked with the Legislature to advance an agenda that works for New Jersey and its residents. As a result of the new fiscal and tax discipline that we have brought to Trenton, 60,000 new private sector jobs have been created in the Garden State since Governor Christie took office, and skyrocketing property taxes are finally being brought under control.
“The Governor’s needed approach stands in stark contrast to the record of previous administrations which added billions to state spending, raised taxes more than 100 times and watched jobs flee the state. It’s clear that our collective efforts to reduce the size of government and fundamentally reform how government works is helping us build a stronger foundation for New Jersey’s future.
“Most significantly, we passed a two-percent cap on property tax increases and major reforms to public employee pensions and benefits. Taxpayers are starting to feel the effects of these reforms as local governments learn to live within the cap and employees begin to pay a fair share for their benefits.
“We must continue to advance an agenda that keeps New Jersey moving forward. I look forward to working with the Governor and my legislative colleagues to enact the Governor’s call for income tax cuts to help tax weary residents and spur job creation. I also am eager to tackle school funding and education reform to make it fairer for all school districts, for the benefit of our students, teachers and taxpayers.
“With additional critical reforms waiting to be approved, it’s imperative that we don’t take our eye off the ball and lose concentration on making New Jersey an economic powerhouse once again. The people of New Jersey have waited far too long for leaders in government to work for them, so let’s continue to be bold and get the job done.”
