Less Than Half of the Promised 3,000 Employee Reduction Delivered
Senator Steve Oroho, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee issued the following statement regarding the latest figures released on Governor Corzine’s Early Retirement Initiative:
“The non-partisan Office of Legislative Services has verified what we have said all along; the Corzine Administration’s Early Retirement Initiative (ERI) won’t save any money. All the ERI has done is to shift costs into an already unbalanced pension system, for a net savings of zero.
“The administration promised the Legislature that there would be savings from the ERI, to date less than half the promised savings have materialized. The governor’s own statements indicate that state government is over-staffed and bloated by at least an additional 1,500 employees. I believe that Governor Corzine should indicate what positions are unnecessary and eliminate them. His ERI has been a dismal failure like every ERI that preceded it.”
