Bill Extends Deadline on Recycling Coordinator Certification
Legislation sponsored by Senators Marcia Karrow (R-Warren/Hunterdon) and Steve Oroho (R-Sussex/Morris/Hunterdon) that would give municipalities a two-year extension on the deadline for training a certified recycling coordinator unanimously passed the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee today.
“Many small towns do not have the resources necessary to immediately respond to every bureaucratic initiative put forth by the Corzine administration,” Karrow stated. “I would prefer that this intrusive and costly requirement be completely repealed, but a two-year extension is a step in the right direction.”
In 2007 the Recycling Enhancement Act was passed and signed into law that, among other things, required each municipality to have a certified recycling coordinator no later than Jan. 13, 2010. Karrow and Oroho’s proposed bill would extend that requirement to Jan. 13, 2012.
“The certification requirement poses a real burden to many municipalities,” Oroho continued. “Recycling coordinators in small towns are volunteers or workers who pull double duty to ensure their town’s are in compliance with state and federal laws. A two-year extension to allow these workers to comply with DEP certification requirements is more than appropriate.”
