Senator Steve Oroho (R-24)

Budget Crisis Should Spur Reform Of Job-Killing DEP Bureaucracy

Senator Steven V. Oroho, Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose and Assemblyman Gary Chiusano (R-Sussex/Morris/Hunterdon) reacted to Governor Corzine’s Fiscal Year 2009 budget proposal by calling for further reductions in the size of State Government, beginning with reforms to the Department of Environmental Protection:

“Governor Corzine has begun to acknowledge what the people and Republican legislators have been saying for years — that the size of the State Government must be cut back,” said Senator Oroho. “Beyond the cuts proposed in the Governor’s budget plan, the Legislature should implement reforms to the operations of the State bureaucracy that will lower the tax burden and spur the creation of jobs in this State.”

“The Governor should use the present budget situation to advance real reforms at the Department of Environmental Protection,” said Assemblywoman McHose. “Part of the reason that New Jersey finds itself in such dire fiscal straits is that our oppressive regulatory climate is driving jobs away from our State. Over the past two years, the DEP has tripled air permit fees, nearly doubled site remediation fees, and adopted rules that mandate fines for companies that commit accidental and minor violations of regulations. Despite the additional fees, the glacial pace of permitting continues, while outside the walls of DEP our businesses and jobs flee New Jersey for other locations.”

“Overlapping and often contradictory regulatory requirements within the various program areas of DEP need to be re-examined,” said Senator Oroho. A less burdensome and more practical regulatory approach that recognizes that New Jersey needs job growth must be adopted by the Corzine Administration.”

“DEP regulations are running ‘mom and pop’ business owners out of business — and out of the State,” said Assemblyman Chiusano. “We cannot continue to pursue overbearing and expensive regulatory programs that do little more than sustain the bureaucracies that create them.”
