Video Posted on SenateNJ.com Discusses Common-Sense Alternative to Higher Gas Taxes and Tolls
Senator Jennifer Beck (R-12) has released a video discussing the transportation proposals in the Republican Common-Sense Plan for a More Affordable New Jersey. It can be viewed at Senatenj.com.
The plan, introduced in May by Republicans in both the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly, provides fiscal and policy proposals that would make New Jersey more affordable and Trenton more accountable.
It includes a solution to ending coming shortfalls in the state’s funding program for roads and mass transit that won’t require New Jersey drivers to pay more for tolls or fuel.
Governor Corzine has proposed increasing tolls on the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike and Atlantic City Expressway by more than 800% to replenish the Transportation Trust Fund and restructure other state debt totally unrelated to transportation. Democrats in the Legislature are proposing raising gas taxes by as much as 18 cents per gallon to pay for transportation needs.
Republicans think it’s wrong to raise tolls and taxes when gas prices are at record highs and the state’s economy is slowing. They took a small portion of the approximately $11 billion added to the state budget over the last six years, and used it to fully finance transportation projects that will benefit every person in the state as well as stimulate the economy.
