The five Republican members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee criticized the Corzine Administration’s refusal to reject calls for tolls on commuters who use Routes 78 and 80:
“New Jersey’s working families are feeling the pain as gas prices soar and the economy teeters on the brink of recession. They cannot afford tolls on these heavily traveled thoroughfares any more than they can withstand increases in the gasoline tax when prices are nearing $4 a gallon.
“The public demands that we abandon the idea of higher tolls and gas taxes. Now is not the time to add tolls to two roads that have never been tolled before — not while drivers are struggling harder than ever to make ends meet.
“We must put an end to Trenton’s insatiable thirst for tax increases and other schemes for taking more of taxpayers money. Responsible budget cuts should be our first priority, rather than taking more from our overtaxed citizens.”
Senators Leonard Lance (R-23), Anthony Bucco (R-25), Kevin O’Toole (R-40), Steve Oroho (R-24) and Phil Haines (R-8) comprise the Republican members of the Budget and Appropriations Committee.
