Senator Leonard Lance, (R-23), the Republican Budget Officer issued the following statement regarding Governor Jon Corzine’s proposed Fiscal Year 2009 budget.
“I am pleased that the Governor and his allies in the Legislature have finally listened to Republicans and have decided to balance the state budget with spending cut rather than tax increases or illegal borrowing. Over the past six years under Democratic control spending has increased by 50 percent and borrowing has more than doubled.
“The Senate Republicans are committed to working towards identifying more substantial and extensive budget cuts as the document moves through the legislative process. I hope that our colleagues on the other side of the aisle join us in our efforts to help make New Jersey affordable for working families.
“Finally, we must introduce fundamental constitutional budget reforms. The Legislature must pass constitutional amendments that cap state spending increases and require that the electorate approve all borrowing. Without these reforms the state is destined to repeat the failures that have brought us to the precipice of financial ruin.”
