Senator Leonard Lance (R-23)

Lance: Corzine Clearly Not Committed to Debt Reduction

Senate Republican Budget Officer Leonard Lance issued the following statement regarding comments made by Governor Jon Corzine in an interview with Bloomberg News:

“In January, Governor Corzine proposed slashing New Jersey’s crushing debt load by imposing an 800 percent toll hike on New Jersey commuters. This is why I am deeply disturbed by the comments the Governor made during an interview with Bloomberg News. His statement that ‘It may be possible that we need to grow debt if there are capital projects we have to do and we don’t have any other way to fund them, ‘ clearly demonstrates that the Corzine Administration is not committed to reducing New Jersey’s staggering debt load.

“The Governor’s comments prove beyond a shadow of doubt that the proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot this November, requiring voter approval of all debt, is essential to the future fiscal health of our state. I am confident that the voters will overwhelmingly approve this necessary measure at the polls this autumn.

“New Jersey doesn’t ‘need to grow debt.’ New Jersey needs genuine debt reduction and the approval of SCR-39 is a first step in that direction.”
