Trenton Democrats Take Shore Protection Funds

$9 Million To Be Diverted Away From Beach Replenishment

Senator Joseph Kyrillos, the ranking Republican member of the Senate Economic Growth Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Senates passage of legislation which would redirect $9 million in funds dedicated to shore protection and beach replenishment. The Shore Protection Fund was created as a direct result of the 1991 “Perfect Storm,” a Nor’easter that caused massive damage along the coast from New Jersey to Maine.

“I am thoroughly frustrated by the insistence of the Trenton Democrats to the diversion of more than one third of the funds dedicated to shore protection and beach replenishment. Their decision to take these funds is both economically and environmentally foolhardy.

“The environmental effects of this diversion could be catastrophic. Even small storms would cause massive flooding along the coast. The flooding could contaminate freshwater supplies. Additionally, pollutants and effluents could be washed into the ocean fouling it for months.

“The economic damage would be just as severe. New Jersey’s 127 miles of coastline are the backbone of this state’s tourism industry.

Tourism generates more that $38 billion in economic activity and more than $ 2 billion in revenue for the state treasury. To state that this bill is penny wise and pound foolish is a mild understatement. I am disappointed that my colleagues chose not to reject this measure on the floor.”
