Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have sent a letter to Senator Paul Sarlo, the committee’s chairman, asking that he schedule at least three days of hearings on the potential reappointment of Barry Albin as a justice to the New Jersey Supreme Court.

The letter states that when a justice is up for reappointment with tenure, “a more exacting review of the person’s qualifications is necessary and justified.” The Republican senators asked that Sarlo provide enough time that all committee members can ask and get answers to any questions, and that the public be given all the time necessary to testify before a committee vote.

Republicans asked in the letter that copies of all decisions authored by Justin Albin and appropriate summaries of all cases in which Justice Albin has participated be provided so that committee members can thoroughly evaluate the quality of the justice’s legal reasoning.

Justice Albin was nominated by then Governor James McGreevey in July 2002, and took office in September 2002. His seven-year initial appointment is about to expire. If reappointed, he will have tenure and can serve until mandatory retirement at age 70 with no further legislative review. Justice Albin is 56.
