Would Save State $18 Million
Senator Joseph Kyrillos (R-13) is a prime sponsor of legislation that would require public employees who are married or with domestic partners to receive health care benefits from only one public employer.
“This legislation is a simple way to rein in state spending, ” Kyrillos stated. “It is not sound financial management to provide duplicative healthcare coverage for public employees, their spouses and their dependents.”
Senate Bill 270 would require married couples or domestic partners who are both public employees to receive health care benefits on the basis of employee and dependent coverage through one public employer, rather than each receiving coverage as an employee. According to the non-partisan Office of Legislative Services, this legislation would provide an estimated cost savings of $18 million.
“This legislation does not take away coverage but rather eliminates superfluous services, ” Kyrillos continued. “The savings could even be applied to providing healthcare coverage for low-income, high-risk individuals with limited access to healthcare. But in the end, the most important thing is that this bill would provide significant savings for the taxpayer.”
