Senator Joseph Kyrillos, a member of the Senate Economic Growth Committee, issued the following statement condemning the introduction of legislation that would siphon $9 million from the Shore Protection Fund.
“The New Jersey shore is both a symbol of the state and an economic engine that drives the state’s tourism industry. Diverting $9 million from this fund could cause irreparable harm to our efforts to maintain New Jersey’s beaches and shore resorts.
“Especially now, with the price of fuel skyrocketing, our beaches and shore resorts from Cape May to Sandy Hook are the destination of choices for millions along the Eastern Seaboard. Redirecting these monies will increase the risk and severity of flooding; raising insurance rates for middle class families and small business owners along the shore.
“I will alert all of my colleagues, from New Jersey’s coastal delegation, from both sides of the aisle to work together to protect our beaches. Additionally, I urge all of my colleagues in both houses of the Legislature to oppose this misguided effort to raid these dedicated funds that protect our beaches and strengthen our economy.”
