Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-13), a member of the Economic Growth committee, will ask the committee to holding hearings on the state’s tax collection policies and tactics:
“A Gannett news report on March 24 indicated that New Jersey law enforcement officers have stopped truckers and threatened to impound their cargoes if their companies didn’t immediately pay state taxes. The business people quoted said they were dumbfounded and outraged by the state’s demand for money that they didn’t believe they owed.
“Business people operating both in and outside the state have questions about whether the practice of impounding cargoes to collect taxes is widespread, or if this aggressive tactic for getting revenue from out-of-state companies is rare.
“At a time when recession is looming, it’s vital that New Jersey bolster its image as a great place to do business. We need the greatest possible number of reputable companies as possible competing in our state if we want to reduce the cost of living and generate more jobs.
“Companies that do business here have every right to clear and just rules about when they owe taxes and when they don’t. And legislators need to determine if aggressive collection tactics really boost revenue or if they scare away companies that could help us generate far more jobs and income over the long term.
“I urge Senator Ray Lesniak, chairman of the Economic Development Committee, to call hearings at the earliest possible opportunity to hear testimony on state tax collection practices from the Department of Taxation, business people, and shipping company officials.
“Hearings would either reassure legislators that our taxation policies are fair and justly enforced, or in need of immediate reform to ensure they balance the need for revenue with the state’s critical interest in economic growth and attraction of business.”
