The following statement was issued today by Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester), Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean (R-Union), Senators Bob Gordon and Paul Sarlo (both D-Bergen/Passaic) and Joseph Kyrillos (R-Monmouth):

A bipartisan group of New Jersey State Senators called on President-elect Trump to make completion of the Gateway project a national priority in his transportation infrastructure effort. (SenateNJ.com)

“Tomorrow evening marks the 108th anniversary of the opening of the Hudson Rail Tunnels and New York’s Penn Station. They were badly damaged by superstorm Sandy, and engineers estimate that these tunnels will need to be closed for extensive reconstruction sometime in the next 10 to 20 years.

“That is why it is so important that we move forward as quickly as possible to make sure that the new Gateway Tunnels are built before one of the old tunnels needs to be closed – a situation that would cause an economic and commuter catastrophe in northern and central New Jersey, forcing up to 75,000 displaced rail riders onto overcrowded highways, buses and PATH trains.

“President-elect Trump has said the nation needs to invest $1 trillion in rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure. We agree, and federal officials have said no rail project is more important to the nation than Gateway. It is critical for our economy, our competitiveness, our safety and our security.

“On the eve of the 108th anniversary of the Hudson River Tunnels, we urge the President-elect to make completion of the Gateway project a national priority in his transportation infrastructure effort.”
