“I’ve heard from many constituents who work long hours Mondays through Fridays or Mondays through Saturdays, to support their families, and they’re looking for a way to hunt here on their day off,” said Kyrillos (R-Monmouth). “New Jersey’s Sunday hunting ban prevents a lot of hard-working people from being able to hunt or forces them on their day off to travel to other states to hunt and otherwise spend their money.”

New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Connecticut are among just 11 states that ban or restrict hunting on Sundays. Neighboring New York allows hunting on Sundays. Senator Kyrillos introduced the first version of Senate Bill 699 in October 2008. He noted that S-699 does not increase bag limits or lengthen existing hunting seasons.

“This legislation will provide some of our hard-working residents with a better quality of life and greater opportunity, while also generating additional revenue and tourism dollars for the state and local businesses,” Kyrillos said. “People spend considerable time and hard-earned dollars to be law-abiding hunters, and with the swift passage of this bill, New Jersey can be one of the few East Coast Sunday hunting destinations and people can come make a weekend out of it here. We have to adapt ahead of other states in this region. I am hopeful that the legislature will immediately get this done to make New Jersey more attractive and competitive.”
