Haines Urges Swift Passage of Energy Tax-Exemption Bills

Senator Phil Haines, R-District 8, made this statement after Senate Bills 241 and 710 were approved for Senate consideration by the Budget and Appropriations Committee:

“Senate Bill 710 would let homeowners and businesses install energy-saving equipment without having to worry that the property improvements will boost their tax bills. Senate Bill 241 would allow anyone to install solar energy systems without seeing their property taxes rise. Both of these bills should be passed as soon as possible by the Legislature.

“Every watt of electricity conserved or produced with solar power reduces demand on the utility grid, and thus restrains the cost of electricity by preventing or delaying the need to build new power plants. It only makes sense that we provide tax exemptions for energy systems that have the potential to lower power prices and reduce pollution for everyone.

“Surging energy prices are straining business and family budgets. These two legislative measures are positive steps we can take today to help restrain power prices, lower pollution and move us closer to the dream of energy self-sufficiency.

“I applaud my fellow members of the Budget and Appropriations Committee for moving this bill out of committee so swiftly, and I urge Senate President Codey to speed these bills through Senate passage.”
