Haines: Toll Hike Plan is a Losing Scenario

Senator Phil Haines (R-8) issued the following statement today reiterating his strong opposition to Governor Corzine’s toll hike gimmick.

“Governor Corzine’s proposal to raise tolls 800% is the worst fiscal gimmick in state history. Commuters, businesses and families would all suffer if tolls are drastically increased. Even residents who don’t take the toll roads will be affected as businesses pass on the toll increases in the form of higher prices of goods and services.

“Another of my major concerns is that traffic on local roads such as Route 206 will increase exponentially as cars and trucks avoid the higher tolls. This means increased congestion on our local streets, more pollution in our communities and added stress on our towns’ transportation infrastructure.

“I encourage the Governor to thoroughly examine all state expenditures and find ways to cut spending, as opposed to settling for this dramatic toll increase. In the past, my colleagues proposed over a billion dollars of spending cuts, but unfortunately their suggestions fell on deaf ears. I, and my colleagues in the Republican caucus, will continue to advocate for spending cuts, before we support this unacceptable toll increase.”
