Senator Philip Haines, R-8, had this to say about Governor Corzine’s threat to sue if the New York City Council raises tolls for New Jersey drivers who use Hudson River tunnels into the city:
“I’m sure it’s thrilling for some folks to see the governors’ effort to stand tall and oppose a plan that would increase tolls on New Jersey commuters by as much as 67%.
“The rest of us would be inspired if he announced, once and for all, that his plan for 800% increases in New Jersey Turnpike tolls is dead. The turnpike toll scheme would hurt New Jersey commuters even more than the New York City plan.
“As a spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, ‘We don’t understand why it’s O.K. for the New Jersey governor to hike tolls on New York cars on the turnpike and parkway to balance his state’s budget, but New York can’t raise revenue dedicated expressly for mass transit improvements for commuters across the region.’
“The answer is simple: Both toll hike plans are misguided. It’s NOT OK to raise any toll if it doesn’t benefit the user of the highway or tunnel or bridge. Governor Corzine should acknowledge his mistake and kill his personal toll hike plan once and for all.”
