Senator Philip Haines, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, made this statement after hearing testimony on the estimated savings from Governor Corzine’s proposal to shut down the Department of Agriculture:
“Eliminating the Department of Agriculture could put federal grants at risk, disrupt promotional activities that bring tourism dollars to the state, and leave farmers without the support they need to thrive in New Jersey.
“Now, during a time of economic instability, is not the time to disrupt an agency that appears to be generating revenue. Why would we risk it for a savings of $500, 000? Surely this amount could be cut elsewhere without putting any federal grants or economic activity at risk.
“Governor Corzine is quoted in news accounts today saying that it’s unlikely all the cuts he has proposed will be made. If this means he’s reconsidering eliminating the Ag Department, I applaud his change of heart.”
