Senator Phil Haines (R-8) made the following statement today regarding Governor Corzine’s proposal to cut $190 million in municipal aid:
“It is not right that cuts in municipal aid are falling hardest on small town governments, which oftentimes run much more efficiently than large cities. These arbitrary cuts will force small towns to impose higher taxes, offer fewer services or lay off municipal employees, including police, firefighters or other public safety personnel.
“I understand and agree that everyone must play a part in helping the state rein in spending. However, we have to base aid on which towns are operating efficiently and which ones are operating inefficiently. We can not just cut aid based purely on a town’s population.
“Acting Treasurer David Rousseau testified yesterday that Governor Corzine’s municipal aid reductions will most likely be modified. I hope that is true, but until they are modified, I will continue to aggressively advocate against municipal aid cuts.”
