Senator Phillip Haines (R-Burlington) issued the following statement regarding Governor Corzine’s proposed budget:
“Governor Corzine needs to expand the cuts by eliminating a department of State Government that spends its time suing other government agencies — and in the process driving up our property taxes.
“I’m sure the people at the Department of Public Advocate are hard-working and committed to their jobs. However, their litigation and related activities cannot be justified in the current fiscal storm that New Jersey is facing.
“Every New Jerseyan should ask themselves this question: Why do we need a government agency that counts the number of public toilets on the Jersey Shore when property taxes are driving working families out of the state?
“Devising a State Budget in times of fiscal restraint requires substantial cuts and difficult choices. My colleagues and I will identify and implement more extensive cuts as we move through the budget process.”
