Legislation sponsored by Senator Phillip Haines, (R-8), which would develop a regional database of public and private entities that provide emergency supplies passed the Senate today. The measure is the first bill sponsored by Senator Haines to pass the Senate.
“Over the past several years Burlington County has experienced numerous, severe flooding problems,” Haines stated. “While we have taken steps to mitigate flooding problems it is only prudent that we take steps to ease the human suffering should we experience flooding in the future.”
The bill provides that the Office of Emergency Management maintain a regional database of public and private entities that provide emergency supplies. Current law requires the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection to develop a system consisting of weather, rainfall and stream collections data devices to predict the areas and the severity of floods in the future.
“This bill combined with existing programs will create the necessary emergency management infrastructure necessary to properly respond to flooding in Burlington County,” Haines added. “As we move forward we will continue to develop additional programs to protect lives and property from natural disasters in New Jersey.”
The legislation must now receive consideration in the General Assembly.
