Senator Phil Haines (R-8) issued the following statement today regarding Governor Corzine’s indication that he will find an alternative plan to closing state parks and eliminating the New Jersey Department of Agriculture:
“I am pleased Governor Corzine has realized what I, along with my Republican colleagues knew all along, the Department of Agriculture is too important to eliminate. The Department of Agriculture generates millions of dollars a year in revenue, protects open space and promotes New Jersey’s diverse farming community. It provides vital services that benefit all New Jersey residents.
“Eliminating the Department of Agriculture would have been a mistake. This agency serves as an advocate for farmers and agriculture in New Jersey, a function that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) could not fill. The DEP are regulators first, and their regulations often put them at odds with our farmers, who face significant competitive pressures that do not exist in other states. I am pleased that the Governor listened and that the department will continue to serve the farmers of this state for years to come.”
