Senator Michael Doherty (R-23), the sponsor of legislation that would result in the elimination of red light camera ticketing systems in New Jersey, has launched an online petition in support of the effort. The petition can be signed by visiting http://www.senatenj.com/cameras.

“In the few days since my legislation banning red light cameras was introduced, the amount of support I’ve received has been overwhelming,” said Doherty. “People really dislike the cameras, but aren’t sure what to do about it. That’s why I launched our online petition to ensure that people can have their voices heard and be counted in their support of this legislation to prohibit red light cameras and automated ticketing systems.”

Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen Dave Wolfe and Greg McGuckin, representing New Jersey’s 10th District, have introduced a bill which would provide an income tax credit for tolls paid on state roads via E-ZPass. Under the bill, a taxpayer whose toll expenses exceed $1,000 per year would be eligible for a $1000 credit on their New Jersey income taxes.

“With this bill we are trying to put money back into the wallets of commuters who have seen relentless toll increases,” said Senator Holzapfel. “By providing commuters with a means to offset a portion of their commuting costs, our bill recognizes that these taxpayers are paying more than their fair share for transportation and economic development projects, while encouraging commuters to use E-Zpass.”

Senator Michael Doherty (R-23) has introduced legislation that would ban municipalities from using camera systems which detect violations of traffic control signals and automate the process of issuing tickets to drivers.

“Although red light cameras were sold to the public as a way to make dangerous intersections safer, it’s become clear that municipalities are primarily interested in the revenues generated by the cameras through tickets and fines,” said Doherty. “There is little if any evidence that the use of red light cameras in New Jersey has reduced the number or severity of accidents at the intersections where they are used. When combined with serious questions regarding personal privacy and the process and constitutionality of being ticketed by a machine, I believe it’s time that we put this ill-conceived red light camera experiment to rest.”

Almost $200,000 of Taxpayer Money Has Paid Half the Salary for Full-Time Local Union President’s Salary in Last 5 Years

Senator Dawn Marie Addiego, Assemblyman Scott Rudder, and Assembly Chris Brown today called on the Pemberton Township Education Association to return almost $200,000 to the school district after the State Commission of Investigation reported the money paid half the salary for the full-time employment of the local union president.

“Pemberton is one of the high-needs districts receiving enormous levels of state aid, mandated by the State Supreme Court to provide for the ‘thorough and efficient’ education of the township’s children. This year alone, $80 million is being poured into the Pemberton schools, and to learn that some of that taxpayer money is being used to pay for a union administrator is intolerable,” said Assemblyman Chris Brown. “Not a single dime of this money helps foster better education or assists our teachers.”

Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove, representing the 9th Legislative District, issued a letter to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) on the tremendous concern among Galloway residents regarding access from Jimmie Leeds Road in Galloway Township to the commuter service area located at Garden State Parkway Interchange 41.

The 9th District Legislators recently met with residents of the Four Seasons Community in Smithville during which several objections were raised about access from Jimmie Leeds Road. At their “meet your legislators” event held at the Galloway municipal building in late February of this year, the Delegation spoke with residents about the pressing need for South Jersey to have a stronger voice on the Turnpike Authority Board after similar complaints were raised on how this interchange project will negatively impact the access from Jimmie Leeds Road.
