Senator Michael Doherty, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, filed a school funding proposal and a constitutional amendment to remove the Court from decisions on how we fund our schools.
“Because the Court has overstepped its clearly defined constitutional authority and assumed the duties of the Legislature and the Executive Branch, I have no choice but to make an effort to amend the constitution to remove the Court from school funding decisions.
“The bill will reform the school funding formula to make certain that State school aid is distributed fairly on a per student basis. This time the money will truly follow the child.
“The proposed constitutional amendment that will forever remove the Court from decisions on how we fund our schools. The amendment will provide equal school aid for each student, regardless of where the student resides. New Jersey needs to establish a fair, simple, transparent, and straightforward educational funding formula that takes the income tax fund and distributes the fund equally to each student.
“I believe the voters of this state will approve a fair school funding formula by an overwhelming margin.”
