District 9

Gold Star Veteran Measure Co-Sponsored by 9th District Delegation Signed into Law by Governor

Legislation that authorizes special Gold Star Family motor vehicle license plates for family members of military personnel who died while on active duty has been signed into law by Governor Christie. Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove were cosponsors of the legislation (S-2192) that passed the Legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support.

Under the new law, those family members who would be eligible include a spouse, parent, brother, sister, child, legal guardian or other legal custodian, whether of whole or half blood or by adoption. Application to the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) must be accompanied by satisfactory proof that the applicant is a family member of a member of the armed services who died while on active duty.

Senator Connors, Assemblyman Rumpf and Assemblywoman Gove issued the following statement on the bill’s signing:

“This new law will allow the families of fallen veterans to honor the cherished memory of their loved ones through a Gold Star Family specialty license plate. New Jersey now joins several other states in the country that offer this same or similar service to veterans’ families.

“The American Gold Star Mothers organization was the driving force behind this legislative initiative and, appropriately, will play a significant role in determining the eligibility criteria. With all that these veterans and their families have sacrificed for our country, it is important to note that no fee will be charged for the license plate.

“While nothing can ever replace the loss of a loved one, by displaying a Gold Star Family license plate family members will have an additional means to demonstrate their pride for a fallen veteran who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.”

Connors, Rumpf and Gove are also the prime sponsors of legislation (A-3308/S-2314) that would establish a set-aside program whereby three percent of all State contracts would be set aside for veteran-owned businesses. The 9th District Delegation’s measure was passed by both Houses of the Legislature and is awaiting action by the Governor.
