9th District Delegation Opposes Offering Driver’s Licenses & In-State Tuition to Illegal Immigrants
Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblyman Daniel M. Van Pelt today expressed deep concern over the Governor’s ambivalence to the recommendations offered by his own Blue Ribbon Advisory Panel on Immigrant Policy, which including allowing the issuance of driver’s license for undocumented aliens as well as in-state tuition for foreign-born New Jersey students. In January, Connors, Rumpf and Van Pelt wrote the Governor urging him to reject these proposals after reports surfaced in the media that the Panel would be offering such recommendations.
The 9th District Lawmakers issued the following statement:
“We are alarmed by the fact that the Governor did not outright reject the Panel’s recommendations to allow the issuance of driver’s licenses to undocumented aliens. The Governor’s comments certainly make it appear as though his Administration is willing to leave the door open to allow individuals who are in our country illegally to obtain a New Jersey driver’s license.
“It should go without saying that, regardless of their country of origin, law abiding residents living in New Jersey legally should be entitled to the benefits afforded them as State citizens. There should be no uncertainly over this, which is why the purpose of this Panel is nothing other than to pave the way for giving driver’s licenses and in-state tuition to illegal immigrants.
“Our Delegation has no intention, whatsoever, of supporting either of these ill-advised proposals. We have consistently maintained that offering driver’s licenses and in-state tuition to these individuals who broke the law with their first step into our country would be essentially ringing the dinner bell for illegal aliens to come to our state in substantial numbers. New Jersey does not have the resources to provide services to legal residents let alone to individuals who entered our country illegally nor should there be any discussion.”
The 9th District Delegation led the effort against an attempt to advance a legislative initiative introduced several years ago to provide undocumented aliens with state driver’s licenses. Additionally, they are the prime sponsors of legislation to exclude illegal aliens from workers’ compensation and temporary disability benefits and to require certification that persons directly or indirectly receiving State monies or privileges are not unauthorized aliens. They are the primary sponsors of legislation to bar companies found to knowingly hire illegal immigrants from receiving State contracts or state tax incentives.
