Responding to concerns raised by the Barnegat Township Governing Body, Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove have contacted the state about expediting planned safety modifications for the Route 9-Barnegat Boulevard Intersection.
In a letter written to New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner James Simpson, the 9th District Legislators made the following remarks:
“Through this communication our Delegation is urging the Department of Transportation (DOT) to take all necessary measures in order to expedite safety modifications needed at the Route 9 and Barnegat Boulevard North intersection. This urgent request is being sent on behalf of the Governing Body of Barnegat Township which continues to be deeply concerned over safety issues associated with the traffic signal and traffic design of the intersection.
“It is our understanding that the Department is aware of the Township’s concerns and is presently working on a solution to abate concerns over traffic at the intersection. It is our further understanding that the Department is estimating that the completion of any safety modification will take at least one year.
“Our Delegation feels it is vitally important to bring to your personal attention that, given the safety factors involved and the need to alleviate traffic buildup at the intersection, the Township is respectfully requesting that the Department expedite the design and review process for any modification to the intersection. Certainly, the Department is aware of the Township’s population growth over the past decade and the demand this has placed on local roadways and intersections.
“Enclosed, for your review and consideration, is a copy of Barnegat Township Resolution 2010-491 approved on December 6, 2010 in which the Governing Body outlines its reasons for requesting that the Department move up its timetable for any planned action at the intersection. This is the second Resolution passed by the Township on this key pressing local transportation issue.
“Again, we are standing with the Barnegat Township Governing Body in respectfully requesting the Department expedite both the approval process and the completion phase of the safety modifications for the Route 9 and Barnegat Boulevard North intersection.”
Copies of the Delegation’s letter to Commissioner Simpson were sent to Barnegat Township Mayor Jeffrey Melchiondo and to the Township Committee.
