District 9

Committee Advances Connors Veterans Measure Concerning Family Burial Plots

The Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee today released a resolution (SR-25) sponsored by Senator Christopher J. Connors, who serves on the Committee, that memorializes Congress to pass H.R.2594, providing plot allowances for spouses and children of veterans who are buried in state cemeteries.

9th legislative district representatives Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove are co-sponsors of the identical Assembly companion measure.

Under current law, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs is authorized to pay a plot allowance of $300 to a state for expenses incurred in the burial of an eligible veteran, but not the veteran’s spouse or children. Eligible spouses or children may be buried at the same site as the veteran, but there is no plot allowance or interment.

Senator Connors, Assemblyman Rumpf and Assemblywoman Gove issued the following statement regarding SR-25′s release from Committee:

“For the family members of veterans who wish to rest in eternity next to their loved ones, our delegation is advocating for the passage of federal legislation to help with one of their final wishes. The allowance permitted would be a fitting and appropriate benefit for veterans given their tremendous sacrifices in defense of our nation and its freedoms. The bipartisan-sponsored resolution released in committee today supports the effort being spearheaded in the House of Representatives by New Jersey’s congressional delegation to provide these funds to veterans’ families for this service. If the federal government were to provide the allowances stipulated under H.R.2594, it would reduce instances where family members of veterans may not be able to afford to be buried next to their loved one.”

Representatives of the 9th district delegation serve on the Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee of both legislative chambers. Connors, Rumpf and Gove are the prime sponsors of the legislation (S-2314/A-3308) that would require three percent of state contracts are set aside for veteran-owned businesses. The 9th district legislators are also the leading sponsors of legislation (S-122/A-347) that recently passed the Senate that would require a portion of tenant-based vouchers under the State’s Rental Assistance Program be reserved for veterans.
