Constitutional Controls for Spending and Borrowing Needed to Fix Fiscal Mess
Senator Steven Oroho and Assemblywoman Alison McHose (Sussex/Morris/Hunterdon) issued the following joint statement on the Governor’s “State of the State” message to the Legislature:
“While we are heartened that the Governor is finally making a long-overdue public acknowledgement that the polices of tax, borrow and spend must come to an end, his proposal to implement statutory spending caps is deeply flawed.
“New Jersey has had statutory spending caps for the State Budget in place for three decades and these caps have been routinely ignored. The only way to truly ensure that the windfall derived from the Governor’s massive toll hike plan is not squandered in yet another Trenton spending spree is to implement constitutional controls on spending, and then impose actual reductions in the size of State Government. Unfortunately, these proposals have been rejected for years by the Trenton Democrats.
“The governor has endorsed a constitutional ban on borrowing without voter approval, which unfortunately will go into effect after he completes the biggest bonding scheme in State history. The time has come for the same constitutional safeguards on spending to be placed before the voters as well.”
