Two District 12 Sites Expected to Receive Historical Preservation Grants from the NJ Historic Trust

The 12th District Legislators announce their support for and anticipate the passage of a bill that would provide preservation funding to the Red Bank Women’s Club and the Parker Homestead.

The bill appropriates $15.5 million from various historic preservation funds to provide grants for certain historic preservation projects.

The Women’s Club of Red Bank, also known as the Anthony Reckless Estate, would receive just under $30, 000 in the form of a capital preservation grant. The Borough of Little Silver is due to receive over $44, 000 in funding in the form of a historic site management grant. Both grants come from the New Jersey Historic Trust.

Senator Jennifer Beck, who sits on the State Senate Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee, said that the legislation passed out of Committee last Thursday, May 7th and is expected to come before the full Senate for a vote at its next voting session on May 21st.

“Historic preservation is of true importance to the cultural future of our state,” said Beck. “We have such a rich history in this area, and I am always proud when I can work to help maintain it. I fully expect the Senate to support this funding as the Committee worked to spread the funding in an equitable way throughout the State.”

Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande both support this legislation when it comes before the General Assembly for a vote.

“Having grown up in Little Silver, I have seen many ups and downs as the Borough has worked to maintain the Parker Homestead, the home of the town’s founding family,” said O’Scanlon. “It is gratifying to see that historic properties are valued in such a way.”

“We have seen so many historic buildings destroyed by neglect,” said Casagrande, “but keeping these structures standing is vital to keeping the character of our small towns alive. These buildings are what is so special about New Jersey, and it’s important to support their restoration and maintenance.”

The Parker Homestead is the oldest home in Little Silver at over 340 years. The 10-acre property was dedicated to the Borough of Little Silver in 1994, one year before the death of the last surviving member of the family, Julia Parker, passed away.

The Anthony Reckless Estate was constructed circa 1870 for one of Red Bank’s leading citizens and New Jersey Senator Anthony Reckless. The Red Bank Women’s Club acquired the property in 1921 and have used it since for its headquarters, community meetings and events.

Long Branch and Spring Lake are also listed as grant recipients on the bill.
