A local bridge in Freehold Township will be named the Corporal Philip A. Reynolds Memorial Bridge under legislation unanimously approved today by the State Senate that was sponsored by Senator Jennifer Beck. The Assembly version of the bill was sponsored by Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande and Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon and was passed by the General Assembly in March.
Once the measure, S-1019/A-2484, is signed into law by the Governor, it will rename the Route 9 bridge over Throckmorton Street in Freehold Township. The bridge shadows the St. Rose of Lima Cemetery where Reynolds is buried.
“Corporal Reynolds gave his life for his country nearly 50 years ago,” Casagrande, R-Monmouth and Mercer, said. “This honor is the least we can do to give back to Corporal Reynolds, his family and his fellow veterans. Corporal Reynolds is a true American hero. He was out-numbered and out-gunned, but he never gave up on himself, his fellow troops or his country.”
Reynolds, a native and lifelong resident of Freehold Borough, died Nov. 29, 1950 on a cold day during battle in Koto-ri when he was just 20-years-old. Under fire, he stood to cover a friend, but was killed while trying clear his jammed gun. The Marine was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. The Marine Corps League Cpl. Philip A. Reynolds Detachment has been lobbying and raising money for the name change.
Beck said that the fact that this legislation has been approved right before Memorial Day weekend should serve as an added reminder to people just how important it is to pay respects to the men and women who have given their lives in the service of our country.
“What makes this renaming so special,” said Beck, also R-Monmouth and Mercer, “is that the Detachment raised the money themselves to honor a man they revere. Corporal Reynolds is a true hero and someone whom we all hold in the highest regard. It has been a privilege to work towards renaming this bridge for him.”
“It is always important to remember our fallen soldiers who have given their lives for our country,” said O’Scanlon, also R-Monmouth and Mercer. “The fact that during this economic decline, the Corporal Philip A. Reynolds Detachment raised the money themselves shows just how dedicated our military personnel are.”
