Senator Jennifer Beck, Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande today called for immediate action in the Legislature to implement the recommendations of the Teen Driver Study Commission. The Commission was formed in 2007 and charged with assessing the state of teen driving in New Jersey and making recommendations to help reduce crashes and save lives. S-16, legislation that puts two of the Commission’s recommendations into practice is approved by the Senate Transportation Committee.
“Over the past couple of years Monmouth County and the state have suffered through an increase in crashes involving teen drivers, ” Beck said. “The recommendations of the Teen Driver Study Commission are common-sense, practical proposals that will help to prevent these tragedies. I am happy that two of the recommendations are moving forward.”
The Commission issued nearly 50 separate recommendations in seven categories. The categories are; graduated driver’s licenses, driver education, driver training, enforcement, insurance, schools and technology.
“It is incumbent upon the Legislature to take action when faced with a severe safety issue which teen driving has become, ” O’Scanlon added. “We must implement these suggestions with deliberate speed.”
Some of the recommendations in the report are; applying sanctions for violations of the graduated drivers license program (GDL), affixing a GDL identifier to vehicles driven by teens, limit the number of passengers in a vehicle operated by a GDL holder and developing and low cost technology that allows parents to monitor their children’s driving behavior.
“Forty-eight teen drivers and 19 of their passengers were involved in fatal crashes in 2006. Immediate implementation of these recommendations will ensure that fewer parents receive that knock at the door in the middle of the night by the local police, ” Casagrande concluded.
