The 12th District Legislators are pleased to announce that “Kyleigh’s Law” (S-2314/A-3069) was signed into law today by Governor Jon Corzine.
The legislation, of which Senator Jennifer Beck was a co-sponsor, requires holders of special learner’s permits, examination permits and provisional driver’s licenses to display an orange hang tag/sticker on their vehicles.
“With so many fatal car accidents involving young drivers,” said Beck, “it is important that we do whatever is in our power to protect them. Kyleigh’s Law will increase peer pressure for teenaged drivers to drive more safely, especially knowing that they can be easily identified as young drivers.”
Beck, along with Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande, believes that although there is more that can be done to keep New Jersey’s young drivers safe, this legislation has the potential to save lives, and that, in the end, is what matters.
The bill is named for Kyleigh Lauren D’Alessio, a 16-year-old honor student and recognized athlete from Long Valley, New Jersey, who died in a car accident involving a young provisional driver with multiple passengers.
Recently, towns within the 12th District, and all over New Jersey, have suffered similar tragedies, losing residents in car accidents involving teenaged drivers. In 2007, three Freehold High School students were lost in a crash. Thanksgiving of 2008 saw an accident involving a teen driver in Colts Neck that left one teenager dead and other critically wounded, and just this year, an Ocean Township teen was killed while driving on the Garden State Parkway.
“I am glad that Governor Corzine has decided to sign this bill into law,” said Casagrande, “especially after the hard work and dedication that Donna Weeks, Kyleigh’s mother, has put into making sure that we took notice of the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death. It has been a noble effort from the start, and it is gratifying to see it finally being enacted.”
“Any car accident that results in a fatality is tragic,” said O’Scanlon, “but when the person lost is so young, then we’ve lost a life-time of potential, too. Kyleigh’s Law is a strong step in keeping out teen drivers safe on the road.”
