“We are pleased that the Governor has signed this important piece of legislation into law,” said Senator Holzapfel. “This will help track the sales of potentially stolen items and provide a way of cracking down on burglaries that take place to support heroin and other drug addictions.”

The secondhand valuables transaction reporting task force established by the bill (A2224) will make recommendations regarding an industry-wide program to be utilized by retail businesses and police departments to monitor and prevent the sale of stolen goods.

“This will help law enforcement to hunt down stolen goods and ensure that criminals are not profiting from theft,” said Assemblyman McGuckin. “Often, the stolen goods are linked to burglaries done by drug users looking to make quick cash to support their addiction. We work closely with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office to combat the growing heroin problems in our district and we believe that this legislation will help to curb these burglaries.”

The 11-member task force will include designees from the Attorney General’s office and the superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, three county prosecutors, three municipal law enforcement officers, and three public members. The bill directs the task force to issue a report of its findings within six months of the initial meeting.

“I am happy that this task force will now have more tools and technology to locate and recover stolen items before they are melted down or sold. Hopefully this law will go a long way in curbing the illegal sale and purchase of stolen property,” stated Assemblyman Wolfe.
