Legislation (S-222) that would allow temporary employees working at state psychiatric institutions or correctional facilities to apply for Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) accidental disability benefits for injuries sustained while performing their duties has been approved by the Senate State Government Committee.

Legislation sponsored by Senate Republican Conference Leader Robert Singer, (R-30) which would require public school districts to make automated defibrillators available at athletic events and gym class passed the Senate Education Committee unanimously today. The bill is in memory of Janet Zilinski who died of cardiac arrest at the age of 11 following a cheerleading practice.

A bill sponsored by Senator Robert Singer, R-30, that directs the Division of Investment in the Department of Treasury not to invest pension or annuity funds in foreign companies doing business in Iran was approved by the Senate. It also requires the division to consult with an independent research firm that specializes in global securities and to take action to sell, redeem, divest, or withdraw any investment in violation of the provisions of this bill.
