American Journalists Reporting from China-North Korea Border Charged, Convicted and Sentenced to 12 Years of Hard Labor
Senator Kevin O’Toole (R-40) has written letters to officials of both the United States and China appealing for their assistance in ongoing efforts to obtain the release of a pair of American journalists who were arrested, convicted and sentenced by North Korea to 12 years of hard labor. The reporters, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, were working on a story about the human trafficking of women across the China-North Korea border at the time of their arrest for committing what has only been described as a “grave crime” by the insular nation.

Senate Republican Whip Kevin O’Toole, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, said that Governor Corzine’s huge, proposed income tax increases will kill jobs in New Jersey, even if they are “temporary” measures, as the governor claims.
“Increasing taxes is the worst job creation strategy conceivable during a recession,” Senator O’Toole said. “High-income earners who have the resources to create jobs and new business will leave the state, and government will not be able to pick up the slack.”

Here are some of the failed policies that have made our situation worse.

The six Republican members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee said today’s testimony shows Governor Corzine has created a breathtakingly irresponsible budget that will inevitably result in crippling tax increases on New Jersey’s middle class if he wins re-election. Testimony on revenue collections show the budget proposed by the governor just a few weeks ago is already out of balance by at least $100 million. The senators urged the governor to fulfill his constitutional obligation to submit an honestly balanced budget.

Senate Republican Whip Kevin O’Toole of Cedar Grove wonders if Governor Jon Corzine has ever totaled the cost of the burdens he has loaded onto the backs of New Jersey’s middle class during his three years in office.
“This year, Governor Corzine wants to raise taxes by more than $420 million by eliminating the middle class tax deduction for property taxes. He wants to raise the costs of owning a car or boat or motorcycle by as much as $60 million by raising fees charged by the Department of Motor Vehicles. He plans to raise sales taxes on some products by $40 million.
