Senator Phil Haines, (R-8), a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee issued the following statement regarding the passage of the fiscal Year 2009 budget today:
“I am disappointed by the Trenton Democrats’ choice of budget priorities. New Jersey is already unaffordable for many middle class families and this budget will exacerbate the problem. Quite simply, this budget is balanced on the backs of South Jersey property tax-payers.

Today’s newspapers indicate that Governor Corzine is considering a $60 million tax increase on electricity and other utilities. The proposal is reportedly part of last minute budget negotiations between the Governor and a Democrat-controlled Legislature.

Program Has Had Little Oversight and Has Become an Annual Slush Fund for a Handful of Municipalities
State Senator Phil Haines, Assemblywoman Dawn Marie Addiego and Assemblyman Scott Rudder today introduced legislation requiring municipalities who receive aid under the state’s distressed cities program to file detailed reports about how that money will be spent and cutting off the special aid to those towns after three years – barring extraordinary circumstances.
