Senator Jennifer Beck issued the following statement today asking New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine to press Governor David Patterson of New York to contribute to the cost of the $7.5 billion trans-Hudson rail tunnel. Both governors are in Washington D.C. today to lobby the federal government for more transportation funding. The current breakdown of costs for the tunnel is $1.5 billion from New Jersey, $3.5 billion from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and $3 billion from federal sources.

Bill Prevents Tuition Assistance and Salary Increases for School Employees that Earn Degrees at Unaccredited Institutions of Higher Education
The Senate approved legislation today, sponsored by Senator Jennifer Beck, that would prevent school employees from receiving tuition assistance or salary increases for degrees earned at “diploma mills.” The legislation, S-2127, was introduced in response to revelations that school administrators in Freehold Township had received both tuition assistance and pay raises after completing doctoral programs at Breyer State University, an unaccredited online school that provides advanced degrees in exchange for little more than the tuition that is paid.

Senator Jennifer Beck, a member of the Senate State Government Committee, issued the following statement regarding the results of a hearing Monday on the misuse of state vehicles detailed in a report issued by the State Auditor on December 21, 2007. Annually, the state Central Motor Pool costs taxpayers about $20 million per year, excluding any administrative costs.

Senator Jennifer Beck, Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande reacted today to published reports that the New Jersey Turnpike Authority is planning another meeting on Governor Corzine’s proposed toll hike plan. The meeting will be held Friday, October 10 at 9:00 A.M. at the Turnpike Authority headquarters in Woodbridge.

Governor Corzine met with Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean and Senator Jennifer Beck, District 12, to discuss an ethics package the governor plans to make public this afternoon. The senators released this joint statement after the meeting:
“If the ethics package truly reflects what the governor described today, it should be given serious and expedited consideration by the Legislature,” Senator Kean said. “The governor can expect strong Republican support if the enabling legislation lives up to its billing.”

Governor Should Take Responsiblity for Plan Rather than Hiding Behind Turnpike Authority
Senator Jennifer Beck, and Assembly members Declan O’Scanlon and Caroline Casagrande, this afternoon said that Governor Jon Corzine’s proposal to nearly triple tolls on the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway will hurt commuters who use those roads and further damage our state’s economy without adequately addressing the future of the Transportation Trust Fund.
