Hearing Can’t Mask Absence of Leadership and Competence That Has Left 300,000 New Jerseyans Without Health Insurance
Senators Gerald Cardinale and Joe Kyrillos, Republicans on the Senate Legislative Oversight Committee, said the committee’s ”upbeat” hearing on electronic medical records appears to have been orchestrated to mask the Corzine administration’s dismal record on health care policy. The senators pointed out that 300,000 fewer people in New Jersey have health insurance than when the Democrats led by Corzine assumed power in 2002.
In contrast, the number of uninsured fell in New York State during the same period. They also noted with frustration that Corzine has put $40 million in matching stimulus funds at risk by moving agonizingly slowly to implement plans for switching to electronic records in New Jersey.

Senator Gerald Cardinale, R-Bergen, said that the Corzine administration has put more than 200 New Jersey jobs at risk by not letting office supply companies bid on a multi-million dollar state contract. Seventeen local businesses now sell tens of millions of dollars of office supplies to the state.
They will lose the business on Sept.1 because the state has contracted with Staples Advantage, a Massachusetts company, to supply all office supplies. Vendors who now hold the contracts say they were given no advance notice that their contracts would not be renewed, nor were they granted the opportunity to bid for the state’s business.

Measure Allows For The Involuntary Outpatient Commitment Of The Severely Mentally Ill
Legislation sponsored by Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen) that would allow for the involuntary commitment of severely mentally ill patients was signed into law today.
“This law will provide the authorities with the necessary tools to safeguard individuals who are incapable of taking care of themselves due to a mental illness,” Cardinale stated. “Also, the bill is an opportunity for many individuals to live normal and productive lives by taking readily available medication.”

“The state has spent $89.2 million to outsource legal work in the last four years, most to large firms with political connections. . .”
From the Trenton Times article, “State Paid $89.2M to Law Firms With Political Ties,” Dec. 28, 2008
Senator Gerald Cardinale, R-Bergen County, asked today whether the Corzine administration finally will take actions that match its election-year hyperbole about the evils of hiring politically connected law firms. The Times of Trenton reported in December that every law firm that received state business had an “active Democratic donor, former politician, attorney general or Supreme Court justice in its stable of lawyers.”

The following is an editorial by Senator Gerald Cardinale of New Jersey’s 39th legislative district that was published in The Record on Friday, June 26, 2009.
Last Monday, for the first time in years, the Judiciary Committee of the state Senate spent a day rigorously and thoughtfully questioning a nominee about his qualifications to be a justice on our state Supreme Court.
This historic review came about because Republican members insisted that the committee stop rubber-stamping the governor’s nominations and meet its constitutionally mandated responsibility to thoroughly evaluate nominees to the state’s most powerful court.

30 Members of the Judiciary Refuse to Take Furloughs
Senator Gerald Cardinale, the senior Republican Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement regarding the refusal of 30 members of the judiciary to take a furlough:
“The refusal of 30 judges to take a furlough demonstrates how out of touch some members of the judiciary are with the people of New Jersey. Apparently, these judges either don’t understand or don’t care about the severity of New Jersey’s budget situation.

‘While he has demonstrated intelligence and eloquence, he has not provided adequate insight into his views or judicial philosophy. The Supreme Court is too important and the stakes are too high to roll the dice on a judge who may sit on the bench for decades to come. I fear that we have not learned all that we should learn about Judge Roberts for a lifetime appointment of such significance.’
– Then U.S. Senator Jon Corzine explaining why he voted against the appointment of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Senator Gerald Cardinale, senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement after reading the blatantly partisan, inflammatory and irresponsible rhetoric of Senator Paul Sarlo, the chairman of the committee, in his press release regarding the reappointment of Justice Barry Albin to the New Jersey Supreme Court:

Senator Gerald Cardinale and Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk announced today that they are drafting legislation that would limit the transfer of hospital licenses to those who intend to operate hospitals. State & Federal Investigations of the BPU Still Pending
Today, the four Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee voted in opposition to the reappointment of Jeanne Fox as president of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) and objected to being rushed through the hearing and to the incomplete testimony provided by the nominee. The members cited numerous reasons for their opposition including the opening of unlawful bank accounts, conflicts of interest between consultants and staff at the Office of Clean Energy and the Clean Energy Council, and former staff members being involved in the awarding of grants totaling millions of dollars. The four Republican members of the committee are Gerald Cardinale, Joe Kyrillos, Bill Baroni and Jennifer Beck.
