Democratic Leaders Shun Assemblywoman Casagrande’s Attempt to Force Vote on Legislation Limiting Pensions to One Public Position
Democratic leaders refused today to consider legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande that would limit pension credits to one public position per person.
“Long before the national economy shattered, our state’s pension system was crumbling,” Casagrande, R-Monmouth and Mercer, said. “One person receiving multiple pensions was always unacceptable, but it’s downright insulting now when so many people – whose tax dollars pay those benefits – have lost their jobs, retirement savings and benefits.”
Casagrande tried to force a vote on her legislation, A-3593, which has languished in the Assembly State Government Committee since it was introduced in January – shunned by Democratic leaders in the Assembly. It has been endorsed by the State Pension and Health Benefits review commission as a way to curb pension abuse by those who cobble together multiple public jobs to tack or boost their public pensions.
“Several recent members of the Legislature who have been charged or convicted of corruption offenses held multiple public jobs. Limiting people to one pension may improve the state’s corrupt culture, but would definitely help with its budget and pension deficits,” Casagrande said. “It is disgraceful that Democratic legislative leaders continue to ignore this common sense reform that would provide financial relief to our overburdened taxpayers who don’t receive excess benefits from their employers.”
