Governor Chris Christie has signed into law a bill sponsored by Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen, Passaic) to encourage local units to enter into joint agreements to purchase fire equipment.

Senator Cardinale’s bill S-1918 is designed to streamline local government and therefore ease the burden on tax payers.

“This cost saving public safety measure is long past due,” said Cardinale. “Fire equipment is an obvious public safety necessity but comes at a stiff price. It is common sense that local entities should be able to join together to buy this highly expensive equipment, such as fire trucks, which can cost around $500,000 each.”

“This bill will help make it possible for departments to be able to afford to purchase the essential public safety equipment needed to save lives and homes,” Cardinale added.

The bill was signed by Governor Christie on Wednesday.
