Senator Gerald Cardinale, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee issued the following statement regarding vacancies on the State Parole Board:
“I am deeply concerned by reports published by the Gannett News Group that the State Parole Board has resorted to swearing in staffers on an interim basis in order to handle the work load. This is troubling for two reasons, the interim members do not require the advice and consent of the Senate and more importantly they don’t solve the staffing issue over the long term.
“The advice and consent mechanism is an additional safeguard to ensure that our parole board members are qualified to recommend the release of convicted felons from custody and to provide supervision upon that release. In fact, one of the interim appointees was forced to resign his position due to his involvement in the Angelo Prisco affair.
The second issue is clearer, the governor must submit to the Senate a list of recommendations to fill all of the vacancies on the State Parole Board immediately. To do any anything less is reckless and irresponsible.”
