Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-39) expressed disappointment today that Governor Corzine’s promised increases in special education funding will not be included in the Fiscal Year 2009 budget as promised. Corzine proposes delaying the funding until the following budget year.
“This demonstrates the problem with ramming a school funding bill through the Legislature, at the eleventh hour of a lame duck session. In their desperation to pass the legislation, the Corzine administration made commitments to the Legislature. It is wrong to renege on such commitments. It undermines the credibility of Corzine and his people.
“Special education aid is a vital component in every school districts budget. Failing to follow through on the assurances of increases in funding made to the Legislature in December will inevitably boost property taxes statewide, especially in suburban communities.
“Coupled with the massive reductions in municipal aid, property tax hikes will be disastrous. It is clear to me and to a majority of the people living in the state that the Corzine administration’s policies are making New Jersey less affordable every day. Except for his favored urban politicians, many of them dual office holders.”
