Will Governor Fulfill Promise to Explain Secret Toll Hike Plan?
Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen) called upon Governor Corzine to make good on his promise to hold a town hall meeting during the month of August on his secret plan to sell the State’s toll roads under the guise of “asset monetization.” In the July 18th edition of the Asbury Park Press, Corzine spokesperson Lilo Stainton stated that “the governor expects to answer questions about ‘monetization’ as the governor calls it, at a town hall meeting in North Jersey in August.”
“It is now thirty days and counting for Governor Corzine to live up to his administration’s publicly stated promise to hold a town hall meeting on his secret scheme to sell off our toll roads, and exponentially raise tolls on Bergen County motorists,” said Cardinale. If the governor fails to hold this promised meeting, it will speak volumes about the secretive nature of his plan and the cynical efforts they have employed to keep details of the secret plan from the public.”
“As long as the governor is coming to North Jersey to explain his proposal to impose historic increases in tolls that constitute nothing less than a new tax on driving, he should have ready answers for the following questions that he failed to address in his ‘core principles’:
How high will tolls go up under your plan? Will they be tied to the rate of inflation after the initial increase?
Will your administration permit Goldman Sachs to play any role whatsoever in the toll road plan or any subsequent bond issuance by the State using proceeds from the toll road sale plan?
Will municipalities that receive in-lieu-of-tax payments from the toll road authorities continue to do so?
Please give us the names of Democrat legislators who support your toll plan?
Do you have a detailed plan to ensure that trucks and other vehicles seeking to avoid higher tolls will not increase congestion on local roads?
“The people of Bergen County are waiting for an explanation of the details of the governor’s plan for decades of higher tolls and increased borrowing. If the governor and the Democrat legislators who voted to sell off the toll roads really think their scheme is such a good idea, then they should have no problem explaining it in a public forum.”
