Senator Joe Pennacchio and Senator Anthony Bucco applauded the announcement of joint hearings of the Senate Education and Labor committees to investigate alarming undercover videos in which top teacher union representatives are filmed revealing that they “bend the truth” to “defend the worst people” and boast of covering up a sex scandal with a teenage girl.

“The direct confirmation by teachers’ union reps that they’re willing to cover up horrendous accusations, such as sex with a student, is deeply disturbing and illegal,” said Pennacchio. “We all know the overwhelming majority of New Jersey teachers want what’s best for our students. It’s sad that these representatives are willing to sacrifice the safety of our children and tarnish the entire education profession to protect dangerous and predatory teachers.”

“As a parent and grandparent, these videos make me sick,” Bucco said. “I want what’s best for the children of New Jersey. Those in the teachers’ union who boast of protecting bad teachers who have hurt students should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. New Jersey’s public schools are some of the best in the nation, let’s make sure they’re the safest for students too.”

Pennacchio and Bucco sponsored recently enacted legislation to keep school children safe from predatory teachers who try to avoid the consequences of their actions by moving from school to school before allegations of abuse are publicized or disciplinary action can be taken. This ‘pass the trash’ law prevents teachers accused of abusive behavior from moving to a new classroom under the radar.

“The safety of our students is paramount,” Pennacchio added. “Our school children deserve the finest teachers in the country. All abuse complaints must be brought to the attention of law enforcement. I want every New Jersey parent to rest assure that we’ll continue working to ensure that their child is in the safest education environment possible.”
