Four Republican members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee today called for the elimination of the Department of the Public Advocate to help cut state spending.
“Eliminating the Public Advocate would save taxpayers up to $10 million dollars without diminishing the protection of the public. Despite its name it, the agency does almost nothing to actually serve the public interest. It has no defined responsibilities and duplicates functions that other agencies have or should perform.”
“The Department of the Public Advocate was eliminated in 1994 and no one missed it. It was again formed in 2006, as part of the Governor’s unbridled growth of state government and has nothing to show for it.
“The ability of an agency to provide efficient, effective service must be the benchmark when legislators review all state expenditures, especially in a tight budget year. The Department of the Public Advocate does not meet this standard. The budget for the Public Advocate, support staff and office space should be eliminated in favor of better programs or tax relief for citizens.”
Senators Anthony Bucco (R-25), Kevin O’Toole (R-40), Steve Oroho (R-24) and Phil Haines (R-8) comprise the Republican members of the Budget and Appropriations Committee who made the comment.
