Special Summer Legislative Session Needed
Republican Senate Budget Officer Anthony Bucco (R-Morris) called on Governor Jon Corzine to call an emergency session of the Legislature this summer to address the largest budget deficit in history. Estimates of next year’s budget shortfall range from $6 billion to more than $10 billion.
“Sweeping the problem under the rug until after the election would be unconscionable,” Senator Bucco said. “A responsible leader would address a problem of this magnitude immediately by bringing all hands on deck for a special session.”
Bucco pointed out that the recently passed budget relies on “temporary measures” such as tax increases totaling $1 billion, suspension of tax rebates for 1.2 million residents and $2.5 billion in one-time federal stimulus aid. The governor should reveal today whether he has a realistic and responsible plan for ensuring that these emergency steps are indeed temporary.
“Neither lawmakers nor the public have any idea what next year’s budget shortfall will be,” Bucco said. “The governor has these facts and figures, and he should share them immediately. We can’t afford the kinds of last-minute decision making by the governor that forced big tax increases and cutbacks that have hurt middle-class families during this recession.”
