Senator Bucco was selected to receive the award in particular recognition of his sponsorship of legislation signed into law to reform New Jersey’s alimony laws to eliminate lifetime awards and establish guidelines for the amount and duration of awards.

“It is a tremendous privilege and honor to be a recipient of the Robert B. Meyner Award, especially given that the award recognizes alimony legislation that reforms the state’s outdated laws,” Bucco said. “This legislation ensures that spouses will be treated fairly and no longer condemned to financially support their former spouse for eternity. I thank the State Bar Association for their support of these important reforms.”

Gov. Christie signed Senator Bucco’s S488/A845 to eliminate lifetime alimony awards and establish guidelines for the amount and duration of awards. The legislation amends current law to limit an alimony award for a marriage or civil union of less than 20 years to less than the length of the union, except in exceptional circumstances.

The legislation would also allow alimony to be terminated upon the paying spouse’s retirement or at the time the spouse receiving alimony cohabits with another person. The legislation also allows the paying spouse to seek modifications of the award owed upon the loss of a job.

The Robert B. Meyner Award recognizes exceptional advocacy efforts of public officials to advance the NJSBA’s mission to serve, protect and promote the personal and professional interest of its attorney members and serve as the voice of New Jersey attorneys to government entities and the public with regard to the law, legal profession and legal system. The award is named after the former governor, state senator and NJSBA Trustee Robert B. Meyner.
